Starry night

January 31, 2009

Getting this shot was one of the creepiest things ever. The lake is iced over about a half mile out and the ice was just cracking and groaning out there. It’s amazing how much light the camera can see when it looks so dark to our eyes. This is a 10-minute exposure.

A cold morning and a resignation

January 28, 2009

Two quick photos from this week… well, one from this week. The first is Flathead Lake with a little ring of ice at sunrise on Monday as I was headed to school to photograph cute little kids coming into their just-finished new classrooms. The second is a shot of the local fire chief who resigned this week. I took the photo this summer but never had a chance to run it until now.

Off to the races

January 25, 2009

Got to shoot some ski racing this weekend, if you can really call it that. They were family races, so every other “racer” was a 4-year-old snowplowing through the gates, but it was fun to watch. And cold.

At the foundry

January 23, 2009

I got to head down to the foundry today for a story about a local artist and what I found was, well, awesome. I had no idea how much work and how many people are involved with making those very expensive bronzes that fill up the galleries around here.

A day on the Big

January 18, 2009

A little inversion here in the Flathead has made life down in the Valley pretty dismal, but up on top of the mountains the view is tough to beat. Blue skies and a million-mile vista were the ticket at the top of Big Mountain on Saturday. I just brought along a very outdated point and shoot, so they could be better — but I can’t fit a DSLR in my pocket.

Sweetest workout ever

January 16, 2009

I went out to do a story on a Silver Sneakers program here in town this week. A quote from the instructor: “Who says chair aerobics isn’t hard?” Uh, me. Chair aerobics is, however, hard to photograph. Here’s a couple:

New site. New Blog(x2). New Problems(x2)

Yes, this post has been here before. I deleted the file that contained all my login information by accident so guess what? I couldn’t log in. One re installation later I’m back. Needless to say, this is more trouble than I thought. Again, if you encounter any broken links, screwy looking pages, etc, please shoot me and e-mail at alex.strickland@gmail.com.

Thanks.
